
DeWitt first appeared on stage when she was 13 years old. DeWitt earned her degree from Ball State University with a Bachelor's degree in Arts. Following that, while performing in summer show when she met with the director, she convinced her to join UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program,where she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt said she never met the actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She worked as a secretary during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is best known for her performance in the series Three's Company's run from 1977 to 1984 as Janet Wood. This was a job that she got after being cast in the pilot episode that followed. She also portrayed Janet in a 1979 episode of the spinoff show The Ropers. DeWitt was the final actor to be featured in the series' 1984 finale. She also appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. After that she ceased acting for a long time. Acting was her first foray back on stage in the month of June in 1991 when she was a performer in the Noises Off production at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. In the following year, she appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured an character based on her voiced by another actress in 1997. She was featured in an episode of Cybill and also made a brief appearance on Living Single's penultimate episode. She's appeared on TV shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special, and Call of the Wild in 2000.
